Introduction
A new study was done in the United States claims that the most commonly used medicines (medication) can increase the risk of depression.
Depending on the study, medicines given for heart diseases, contraception medicines, and side-effects of some painkillers may lead to depression.
Depression symptoms were detected in one-third of the 26,000 people participating in the study.

American Medical Association study speaks to people of the United States of 18 years of age or older. These people had taken at least one type of doctor’s medicine between 2005 and 2014.
It was found that 37% of these medicines written by the doctor have a possible side effect of depression.

Percent of depression in people by types of medication
- 7 percent of people taking a kind of medicine
- 9 percent of people taking two kinds of medicine
- 15 percent of people taking three or more drugs
- About 5 percent of people in the US suffer from depression.
The primary author of the study, Dima Kato, said, “Many people will be surprised that their medicines may not have anything to do with mood, panic, or depression. But still, they may feel the symptoms of depression due to medications it can happen. “

If you get sick for any reason, you may feel depressed. It may also be that people participating in the study have been victims of depression for the first time.
According to Health.harvard.edu, these medicines can cause depression in patients.
- Antibiotics like ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and levofloxacin (Levaquin)
- Prescribed painkillers like fentanyl (Abstral) and oxycodone (Oxycontin)
- Hormone replacement therapy like estrogen (Premarin)
- Corticosteroids like triamcinolone (Aristocort) and prednisone (Deltasone)
- Beta-blockers like carvedilol (Coreg) and metoprolol (Lopressor)
- Statins like pravastatin (Pravachol) and simvastatin (Zocor)
- Anticholinergic drugs like dicyclomine (Bentyl)
- Anticonvulsant medications like topiramate (Topamax) and gabapentin (Neurontin).
Paradoxically, two medicines are sometimes prescribed by doctors for severe depression: quetiapine (Seroquel) and aripiprazole (Abilify).
If you find or think that the medicine you are already taking may be causing some depression, then do not hesitate to share your symptoms and views with your doctor about that medicine.
